PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely perform communication without making mode switching dependent on the software of data terminal equipment by storing an execution program concerning a processing procedure and automatically switching an operating mode for the unit of the previously specified processing procedure corresponding to the proceeding of the execution program. SOLUTION: A facsimile control unit (DTE) 12 sets a total mode capable of controlling the sequence of preceding and following modes to a MODEM 11. The MODEM 11 executes the total mode while receiving an instruction from the DTE 12 and when processing in the preceding mode is finished, the end is reported to the DTE, 12. Then, a timer is set by the MODEM itself and time to the start of the next mode is monitored. When the end report is received, the DTE 12 instructs the MODEM 11 in the mode to be next executed. Corresponding to the time-out of the timer, the MODEM 11 executes the next mode. Thus, since the MODEM 11 automatically executes processing only by receiving the instruction of mode setting from the DTE 12, the delay in dealing with the next mode can be prevented.
