The invention relates to a method for the functional testing of a bypass element, according to which the boost pressure P of a turbocharger (40) is monitored and the boost pressure change delta p during a brief opening of the bypass element (24) is determined. If the boost pressure change remains below a set limit value G a malfunction of the bypass element (24) is deduced. The methods provided for by the invention permit the simple functional testing of bypass elements (24).
