A compact low voltage energy-saving lamp (1) consists of a one-sided gas discharge vessel (2) in a socket plus an electronic ballast apparatus for current limiting and ignition of the gas discharge, which is accommodated in a housing that carries a socket (3) to join onto the lamp socket. As a socket, a standard pin socket for halogen lamps is present. At the input to the ballast apparatus, a low voltage full-wave rectifier circuit is provided, suitable for direct and alternating voltages of arbitrary frequency. A high frequency converter is connected afterwards which takes care of the gas discharge vessel. The electronic ballast device is constructed directly for a high frequency input voltage without input rectification.
