Inaccessible vessels (2) can be pressure tested using a sound-wave detection receiver (12) applied temporarily to the outer surface of the vessels, through access ducts (9), for the duration of the test. A duct (10), of plastics or metal, is welded or adhesively attached to a tank to provide an access well to a part of the surface, prior to the tank being buried. For testing, a sound detection device is lowered down the well on to the outer surface. The device may be magnetic to aid good contact, and the well may contain a small amount of oil to further assist contact. Covers (17,20) are provided to close the access duct when not in use.
