[Also in Division F2] A method of manufacturing a friction pad, e.g. for clutches and brakes, comprises placing a sintered friction lining segment 1, having projections on one surface, so that the projections are in contact with a surface of a hardened carrier lamination (2), (Fig. 2, not shown), placing the lining and lamination between the electrodes of a resistance welding press and welding the lining to the lamination by melting the projections under pressure, the density of the lining material below and within the projections being lower than that of the rest of the lining before welding. The lining, which is produced from a powder mixture by compression moulding and sintering, is formed with projections which define circumferential, radial and other lines, 11, 12, 13 and 14, respectively, which correspond substantially to the directions of maximum stress of the pad in use. The projections cover between 10% and 50% of the surface area of the lining. The carrier lamination is of hardened, tempered steel. |
