Therapeutic and prophylactic methods are disclosed using varicella zoster immune globulin for preventing multiple sclerosis, reducing the number or the severity of acute exacerbations in multiple sclerosis, for delaying the progression of relapse-remitting multiple sclerosis to chronic progressive multiple sclerosis, and for delaying the progression of chronic progressive multiple sclerosis in a mammal.
