PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recorder capable of improving operating speed by executing the recording operation at an operating speed corresponding to the kind of a sheet. SOLUTION: A recording paper (sheet) conveyed by a paper feed roller 2 passes through a paper kind detecting sensor 3 provided in the vicinity of a paper supplying unit 1, then a kind of the paper is judged by detecting a diffusing reflection rate of the recording paper by the paper kind detecting sensor 3. The next conveying timing of the recording paper is controlled in accordance with the kind of the paper.
