PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method for an α-oxoaldehyde and an α- oxocarboxylate capable of producing in higher yield than conventional methods and stably obtaining higher concentration of an α-oxoaldehyde solution and gas than conventional methods. SOLUTION: This method comprises gas phase oxidation of an alkylene glycol in the presence of an alcohol (a), oxygen and a catalyst (a) (the former reaction) and gas phase oxidation of an α-oxoaldehyde with an alcohol (b) or an olefin in the presence of oxygen and a catalyst (b) (the latter reaction). The moler ratio of the alkylene glycol to the alcohol is preferably (1:100) to (5:1). The alcohol (a) and the alcohol (b) are preferably the same compound. A reactor linking the former and the latter subreactors, so called a two-step linked reactor, is preferably used if the former and latter reactions are performed successively. |
