The device provides an automatic tethered life-raft for victim. The safety system for a person who has fallen overboard comprises a chain or rope (l) wound on a spool (b) inside a container (c) which is mounted on the back of the boat (bat). A container which can serve as a refuge for a man overboard is built with the container, and the free end of the chain or rope is securely attached to the back of the boat. The container and refuge can be released from the boat, falling into the water but remaining attached to the boat by the chain or rope, providing the man with an opportunity to regain his position on board. Braking elements comprising pivoting flaps may be attached to the container, in order to have the effect of slowing down the boat once the device has been launched. The device may be launched a remote control, and once launched may have the effect of stopping the boat's engine.
