PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inter-vehicle distance detector for making a driver able to visually, sensuously and instantaneously recognize the degree of a caution to a preceding vehicle. SOLUTION: An inter-vehicle distance sensor 12 provided in a present vehicle detects the inter-vehicle distance of the present vehicle and the preceding vehicle), and a car speed sensor 13 provided in the present vehicle detects the speed of the present vehicle. A display device 14 provided on the driver's seat of the present vehicle displays a vehicle drawing imitating the preceding vehicle), and a controller 16 controls the display device 14 based on the respective detection output of the inter-vehicle distance sensor 12 and the car speed sensor 13. The controller 16 is constituted so as to display a small vehicle drawing at the display device 14 when the inter-vehicle distance is large and the speed of the present vehicle is low, and display the vehicle drawing large gradually or stepwise when the inter-vehicle distance gradually shortens or the speed of the present vehicle gradually gets high.
