PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rare-gas discharge lamp capable of obtaining a flicker- suppressed stable discharge state by comparatively simple formation, and capable of improving a light output. SOLUTION: This lamp is equipped with an envelope 1 having a luminous layer in the inside, a pair of belt-like external electrodes 5, 6 comprising metal members arranged respectively separately on the circumferential face of the envelope 1 so that a first and a second opening parts 7, 8 will be formed almost in the full length of the circumferential face, and an insulating member mounted so as to cover the external electrodes 5, 6. And deformed parts 5A, 6A are formed only on the central part, excluding end parts, of the side edge parts 5b, 6b of the pair of external electrodes 5, 6 forming the second opening part 8.
