PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a pentafluoroethane or a chlorotetrafluoroethane as a reactional product in a high yield by reacting tetrafluoroethane with chlorine and hydrogen fluoride. SOLUTION: (A) 1,1,1,2-Tetrafluoroethane (HFC-134a) is reacted with (B) chlorine and (C) hydrogen fluoride at a temp. of 250-350 deg.C using chromium oxide orγ-alumina as a catalyst to thereby produce (D) 1,1,1,2,2- pentafluoroethane (HFC-125) and (E) 2-CHLORO-1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (HCFC-124). In the above reaction, the HFC-125 is obtained as a main reactional product. The molar ratio of the components C to A is preferably (0.1:1) to (20:1) and the radio of the components B to A is preferably 3-30 vol.% in the above reaction. The production of CFCs can be suppressed to the utmost by the above method.
