PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording and reproducing method and a device therefor enabling protection of a tape, reduction in the degradation of a signal, and advanced reproduction. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording and reproducing device is provided with a guide post to increase a wrapping angle of a tape 1 to the rotational plane of a rotary drum, in order to increase an effective trace length of an advance head trace 4 and a guide tape 7, which is arranged at the position of a recording head traces 5 abutted on the edge of the tape 1 by increase in the wrapping angle of the tape 1 and has at least a length corresponding to the increase in the wrapping angle, and the edge of the tape 1 is abutted on the guide tape 7 before the other part of the tape 1 except the edge is abutted on the recording head, therefore, the lowest head on the rotary drum is abutted on the edge, and this eliminates the tape from being damaged.
