PRODUCTION OF SODA-LIME GLASS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a soda-lime glass by which the formation of nickel sulfide(NiS) can be effectively suppressed at the time of melting glass materials. SOLUTION: Nickel sulfide(NiS) as foreign matter present in a soda-lime glass is formed during the vitrification reaction of Ni in Ni-contg. metal particles allowed to enter into glass materials and in stainless steel used in a melting furnace with S in Na2SO4 used as one of the glass materials in a hot state. The formation of NiS by the reaction of Ni with S at the time of melting can be suppressed or perfectly prevented by previously adding a very small amt. of an additive comprising a metal oxide, chloride, sulfate or nitrate to the glass materials.
