PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact video display device in which space for arranging a projection optical system and the like is easily secured. SOLUTION: An eyepiece optical system EL projecting a two-dimensional video on an image field I to the eye so that the enlarged virtual image thereof may be observed, is constituted of a common use optical system CL whose one part constitutes one part of the projection optical system. The projection optical system projects the two-dimensional video to the image field I. The optical axis A1 of the optical system EL is eccentric to the visual line A0 of the eye, and the optical system CL has an anamorphic aspherical surface.
