[Also in Divisions A4 and E2] Adjoining sections A, B of a foldable gymnastic mat, each section consisting of a shockabsorbing filler 10 of polyethylene foam or hair felt and top and bottom covers 12, 11 stitched together at 15, are detachably secured together to provide a continuous mat top surface by a connector consisting of a slotted tube 18 slidingly engaged over extensions 14a of the top cover. The extensions 14a each have a laterally extending bead and are formed by insertion of a cord 17 into a tube formed by a line of stitching 13, the slotted tube 18 being applied and removed when the two sections are placed one on top of the other. In modifications, each filler 10 is in sections and may be adhered to the cover, or the bead is formed by spaced nylon rivets. Detachable connectors may be used to connect mat portions, consisting of a number of sections which are permanently connected by stitching together the extensions 14a, and may comprise a series of main sections S1, S2, S4, S6, S8 and S10 spaced by connecting sections S3, S5, S7 and S9 which are dimensioned so that the mat is roll-foldable. Other arrangement of roll-foldable sections are described and roll-foldable mats may be connected end-to-end, side-by-side or to an intermediate auxiliary section to provide larger mats, e.g. for wrestling.
