PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an object detecting apparatus by which an object can be detected surely irrespective of a reflection state that electromagnetic waves are reflected by the object. SOLUTION: A detecting area which detects a target T is divided into a plurality of small detecting areas, and the small detecting areas are scanned with a spotlike laser beam. Received level signals of reflected waves in the small detecting areas are added and stored in an additon memory which is set at every detected distance. When an added value exceeds a threshold value, a distance up to the target T is detected. Consequently, even when the received level signals of the reflected waves in the small detecting areas are small because the target T hardly reflects electromagnetic waves, the target T can be detected surely in the detecting areas as a whole. Even when reflected waves from rain or snow exits in a rainfall or a snowfall, the added value of the received level signals of the rain or the snow whose distance is random does not exceed the threshold value. As a result, the target T is not detected erroneously as the rain or the snow.
