A METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR ENCODING AND DECODING COMPRESSED IMAGES

A method and apparatus of image compression and decompression uses wavelet transformations. The image (60) is partitioned into a number of tiles (61) which overlap at least two oppositely adjacent tiles. For compressing the image, each tile (61) is decomposed into at least one sequence of transform coefficients; and the sequences are combined to provide compressed data representing the input image. For decompressing the image, the sequences of transform coefficients are convolved so as to reconstruct the overlapping tiles, which are then added together to form the image.
