PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently producing a fluorophenol useful as an intermediate compound useful as an intermediate compound for medicines, agrochemicals, etc., by diazotizing polyfluoroaniline and reacting the resultant diazonium salt with hypophosphorous acid. SOLUTION: A polyfluoroaniline of formula I [(n) is 2-5] (e.g. 2,4- difluoroaniline, 2,6-difluoroaniline, 2,3,4-trifluoroaniline or 2,4,6-trifluoroaniline) is diazotized to afford a diazonium salt of formula II (X is HSO4, BF or PF6), which is then reacted with hypophosphorous acid to provide the objective compound of formula III (e.g. 3-fluorophenol, 2,3-difluorophenol or 3,5-difluorophenol). In the above reaction, it is preferable to use a metal catalyst such as copper or copper (I) salt.
