PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a conditioning agent having high conditioning properties, yet readily producible by using an N-acyl-L-glutamic acid. SOLUTION: This conditioning agent comprises an N-acyl-L-glutamic acid, for example, having the structure of the formula [R is a 7-17C (un)saturated fatty acid hydrocarbon residue group], e.g. N-octanoyl-L-glutamic acid, etc. A cosmetic for cleaning hair or a hair treatment is formulated with about 0.1-10 wt.% of the compound and further an alkyl sulfate ester, a polyoxyethylene alkyl ether sulfate ester, etc.
