PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify and speed up processes by recognizing the shape of the page border part of a bound document with page border read data, deciding the binding part area of spread pages from the recognized shape of the page border part, and recognizing the shape of the spread bound document and making image corrections. SOLUTION: A binding part correcting processing means 409 finds a peak density and address of the border of pages from read data, after movement average processing which are stored in a memory and compares them with a threshold, by main scanning lines to calculate the page border position. The movement average of the calculated data on the border position is found, and an image is restored according to the result. Then a page image area is detected for detecting the peak of pixel data on the high-density side of image density data of read lines, pixel data on the low density side which becomes a specific level or more are detected from the peak value, and pixels which are of equal to or larger than the peak value of the pixel data on the high density side are detected to accurate decision of the border position.
