PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the highest temperature in a storage container for radioactive material by reducing the housing numbers per storage container of spent fuel, and housing a plurality of storage containers in one transport container. SOLUTION: A canister 31 and spent fuel housed therein within a housing pipe 12 are cooled with air Z passing through a canister storage chamber 10, and the decay heat of the spent fuel is removed to suppress the temperature rise. When the cooling degree by the air Z is reduced, the temperature rise within the canister is enlarged. However, since the canister 31 is formed of a combination body of independent segments 31a-31d obtained by dividing the canister 31 to a plurality of pieces (four pieces), the heating of the spent fuel per one segment 31a... is small, compared with a conventional cylindrical canister. Accordingly, the highest temperature of the canister is reduced, and the thermal tolerance to a breakage accident such as high-temperature creep failure of a covering pipe for radioactive material can be enhanced.
