PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable proper exposure control even in the case of both rear light and excessive front light by dividing an image-pickup picture plane into blocks, finding the representative luminance with respect to an arbitrary area as a set of specific blocks determined according to the distance to a subject, and finding an exposure controlled variable according to the rate of blocks meeting specific threshold conditions for the arbitrary area. SOLUTION: An image-pickup image plane 122 is divided into 8×6 blocks to make 1st to 6th areas. The size of the arbitrary area as the set of the specified blocks determined according to the distance from the subject to a CCD image-pickup element is set large to all the blocks in the 5th and 6th areas, when the distance is short and small to all the blocks in the 6th area, when it is long. Then the rate of the blocks meeting the specified threshold conditions for the arbitrary area is found. Consequently, the size of the subject can be reflected, and the precision of rear light and excessive front light can be viewed accurately.
