Heavy metal ions are separated from aqueous solution at pH 5-7 by a process comprising: (a) formation of a polyelectrolyte complex of a polycation and a phosphone compound; (b) loading the polyelectrolyte complex with the heavy metal ions; and (c) separating the loaded polyelectrolyte complex.
