PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium to be used for a digital method having a small block error rate and high reliability. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium is produced by forming a base coating layer on a nonmagnetic supporting body, and forming a magnetic layer containing a magnetic powder and a binder thereon. The magnetic layer has 4 to 20 ratio of surface roughness (P-V)/Ra, >=0.7 squareness ratio in the longitudinal direction, <=0.5 squareness ratio in the perpendicular direction to the layer surface, and <=10<7>Ω/sq surface electric resistance.
