PROGRAMMABLE GATEWAY FOR A VIRTUAL BEARER CHANNEL PLATFORM

A programmable gateway for processing protocol conversion for a virtual bearer channel platform (250). The platform includes a plurality of transaction processing units (TPUs) (525, 535). A resource manager (560) provides a centralized control for the allocation of bandwidth to the transaction processing units (525, 535). The resource manager (560) allocates available bearer channels (215) for the connections with the communications network, (525, 535) and also allocates available time slots in the distribution network (540) to the TPUs (525, 535).
