PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polymer having high stereoregularity and a broad molecular weight distribution in high activity by (co)polymerizing anα-olefin in the presence of a catalyst comprising a solid catalyst component, an organoaluminum compound, and an organosilicon compound component having a specified purity. SOLUTION: This catalyst comprises a solid catalyst component essentially consisting of Mg, Ti, a halogen, and an electron donor, an organoaluminum compound component, and an organosilicon compound component of formula I or II (wherein R<1> is a 1-8C hydrocarbon group; R2 is a 2-24C hydrocarbonamino or a hydrocarbonalkoxy, and R<3> N is a 7-40C polycyclic amino). Ethylene or anα-olefin is subjected to prepolymerization and then subjected to main polymerization. The prepolymerization can be carried out by a gas phase process, a slurry process, or the like. The solid obtained in the prepolymerization is subjected to the main polymerization after being separated or without being separated. The prepolymerization is carried out for usually, 0.1-10 hr and is continued until 0.1-100 g of a polymer is formed per g of the solid catalyst component.
