The cotton wool (4) is wound onto a core (10) driven by the endless belt (5) whose side edges (S) are designed to be free of fibres. The belt can have embedded fibre strands at least in one longitudinal plane (E). The fibre strands are formed from cords arranged side by side and running at an acute angle to the longitudinal direction of the belt. The belt can have a profiled surface on the side opposite the surface on which the reel is wound.
