PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new amino alcohol that is useful as a softening base agent having excellent flexibility and good biodegradability when a cationic surfactant is derived from the alcohol. SOLUTION: This new amino alcohol is represented by formula I (R<1> and R<2> are each a 1-4C alkyl, a hydroxyalkyl; R<3> and R<4> are each H, a 1-4C alkyl; A is -OH or -NH2 ), typically 3-(N,N-dimethylaminomethyl)-2,4-pentanediol or the like. This new alcohol is prepared by reaction of a compound of formula II [B is -CN, -C(=O)R<5> (R<5> is H, a 1-4C alkyl) or the like] with a secondary amine of formula III to form an amine represented by formula IV followed by catalytic reduction of the product over a metallic catalyst (Raney nickel) at 20-200 deg.C under normal pressure to 15 MPa or by reducing with a reducing agent (for example, lithium aluminum hydride) at 20-60 deg.C. |
