<p>The syringe (10) includes a barrel (12), a plunger (44) and an adapter (24) for mounting the needle in the distal end of the barrel. The distal end (46) of the plunger includes a plurality of circumferentially spaced teeth (50) having radially projecting fingers (78) and (76) with contact surfaces. The adapter includes a plurality of circumferentially spaced teeth (42) having undercut surfaces. By advancing the plunger to engage the adapter and rotating the plunger relative to the adapter and syringe barrel, the plunger and adapter are locked to one another. By further rotating the plunger and adapter, the adapter is unscrewed from the barrel end and withdrawn with the syringe needle into the interior of the barrel. The plunger may be broken off adjacent the adapter and inserted, broken end first, into the distal end of the barrel to seal the barrel.</p> |
