A peripheral input device (110) having a retractable cord (116) operably coupling the device to a computer system (102) is disclosed. A reel assembly (214) disposed within the body of the peripheral input device (110) allows the cord (116) to be alternately extended and retracted as desired by the user. The reel assembly (214) may include a stop mechanism (354) for limiting tension on the cord (116) while the device (110) is being manipulated by the user.
