1,223,633. Hydrolysing cellulose butyrate; lacquer compositions. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 25 April, 1968 [1 May, 1967], No. 19657/68. Headings C3A and C3F. [Also in Division B2] Cellulose butyrate containing at least 52% by wt. butyryl, 0-1À5% acetyl and/or propionyl and 0-0À25% free OH groups is hydrolysed by heating a solution of the ester in a solvent comprising butyric acid and 0À5-30% water, until the proportion of OH groups is 1-3À2%, said ester containing 0-0À006% combined sulphate and said solvent being essentially free of dissolved sulphate ions and fatty acid anhydrides. Novel products may be obtained, e.g. having an IV of 0À05-1À8, a butyryl content of at least 51À5%, preferably up to 55À5%, an OH content of 1-3À2% and wherein the ratio of primary to secondary OH is at most 1:1. A lacquer contains a hydrolysed cellulose butyrate as above together with a butylated U-F resin, toluene (in which the hydrolysed ester is soluble) and dioctyl phthalate. |
