Carbon black is treated, by oxidation with ozone, to improve its quality as an ink pigment in a batch operated process. A suitable reactor has a vertical cylindrical barrel (1) with a gas distributor device at its lower end, consisting of an upwards directed cone (3) positioned in the truncated conical bottom section (2) of the barrel and an approximately tangentially directed inlet nozzle (4) for the treatment gas. The reactor has a settling zone (5) above the bed space (1), an outlet (6) for venting spent gas, and a charging nozzle (8) for loading crude pigment. Ozone is generated by a high voltage device (7). A typical reactor unit has an 8 cm diameter /* 1.5 m barrel, holding approximately 200 g of gas-carbon at 20-30 deg C, and uses approximately 12-25g/h ozone in 0.3 - 0.6 Nm<3>/h total gas flow from an ozone generator operated at 0.6 barg (max.), 35 deg C, and 16kV with a cooling water flow of 40l/h (15 deg C).
