PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which has an excellent electromagnetic conversion characteristic without increasing the coercive force of a recording-layer coating film and without improving its surface smoothness, whose durability is sufficient even with reference to the high-speed sliding contact of a head and which is suitable for a high-density recording operation. SOLUTION: At least one non-recording layer is formed on a nonmagnetic support 30. One or more recording layers which contain at least a ferromagnetic powder and a binder are formed on the non-recording layer. At this time, the thickness of the recording layers is set at 0.6μm or lower, and the ratio (HcV /HcH) of a coercive force (HcV) in a direction perpendicular to a recording face to a coercive force (HcH) in a direction parallel to the recording face is set at 0.78 or higher. The surface roughness of the recording layers is set at 0.004 to 0.016μm or lower in terms of average roughness in the center line.
