Data messages are transmitted from a source terminal (10) to a similar destination terminal. An operation is performed to generate additional signals to determine the connection path through the network. Each terminal has its own identification code. A first packet of data, with a verification code, is sent, and the destination terminal returns the signal if it has sufficient memory to accept the signal and if the identification code is acceptable, e.g. different from the preceding code. If the code is correct but insufficient memory is available, no signal is returned. After a delay, the source terminal retransmits the signal with the same code. |
