The ballast (6) acts as a counterweight in stabilising the extended boom (4). A trailing axle (7) is connected to the rear of the mobile crane (1) so as not to be easily detachable and forms a three-axled chassis with a permissible total weight of 25 tonnes. The non-driven trailing axle may possess a holder for the ballast during travel. The connection between the trailing axle and the vehicle's rear may be in the form of a Cardan linkage (8). A hydraulic arrangement (9) could be attached to a first fixture point on the mobile crane's rear and to a second fixture point near the trailing axle. The first fixture point may be above or beneath the second fixture point and enables the wheels on the trailing axle to be lifted to clear the ground.
