Production of ceramic, diffusion-limiting coating used as diffusion and/or oxygen ion conducting layer in oxygen probe

Production of ceramic, diffusion-limiting coatings with finely dispersed ceramic powder uses an oxide ceramic powder (I) with a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area of 5-50 m<2>/g and average primary particle size of 20-450 nm. At least part of the powder is pretreated at 800-1150 deg C, then mixed with untreated powder, applied to a substrate stable at high temperature and fired at 1000-1350 deg C. An Independent claim is also included for a method using (I) mixed with a recrystallizing glass powder (II).
