In the production of chipboards, after the board material leaves the press (5), at least one surface is embossed while the board is still warm from the press. Where the board material is composed of wood particles, the surface temp. is 70-160 deg C. The embossing die is heated, and the embossed board material is wetted at least in zones. Any particles clinging to the embossed surface are removed. Before embossing, a thin material can be placed over the board surface to be laminated to it by the embossing action. The embossing is applied locally, to give a patterned surface appearance. The board material is produced continuously in a double belt press, with the embossing effected in a following roller assembly with embossing rollers. An Independent claim is included for an assembly with a double belt press followed by a surface embossing station. The board material is still warm from the press when it enters the embossing station. Preferred Features: A unit (18) applies moisture, as water or steam, at least locally to the surface of the embossed board (10). A station (16,17) removes loose particles from the board (10) surface. A thin material (21) can be laid (23) on the board material, between the press and the embossing station. The press is a double-belt press (50) for the continuous production of board (10). An embossing station, with at least one pair of embossing rollers (14,15), is at a short gap from the press outlet.
