Xylene formaldehyde, alkylphenol condensation resin prepn - with amine catalyst deactivator added to prevent discoloration

A process for the prepn. of condensation resins from HCHO-xylene prepolymers and alkylphenols in the presence of an acid catalyst at 130-250 degrees C comprises the addition of a deactivator, esp. an amine, towards the end of the reaction. Discolouration and disadvantages of a continued condensation in the presence of p-toluene sulphonic acid catalyst are avoided. The resin may be used in lacquers.
