New amino phenols are of formula (I)(R)a-Ar(OH)c-(NH2)b (I). In (I) R is a hydrocarbon-based gp. contg. >= 10 aliphatic C atoms, opt. substd. by =1 non-hydrocarbon gp. per 10C atoms and opt. contg. =1 double bond per 10 single bonds, Ar is a mono- or polynuclear aromatic gp. opt. fused and/or bridged, and opt. mono-, di- or trisubstd. by lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, NO2 and/or halogen, and a, b, and c are each 1-3 times the no. of aromatic rings in Ar. When Ar is a benzene ring substd. by one OH gp. and one R gp. the R gp. is ortho or para to the OH gp. (I) can be used as detergent-dispersant additives for lubricants and hydraulic fluids (see also BE 847220) and as detergent-dispersants, antioxidants and corrosion inhibitors in fuels. In an example, a cpd. (I) is prepd. by nitrating polyisobutene-phenol and reducing the product by hydrogenating with PtO2. |
