The rate of water flow on an installation is measured during successive periods and the smallest value is recorded. If the smallest value is zero, the time counter is reset, if not a tolerated leak time is set inversely to the value of the leak flow. If the leak persists for longer than the tolerated value an alarm/switch off is activated. An Independent claim is included for a device to carry out the described process.
