A method of manufacturing a microlens array comprises the steps of fitting a substrate precursor (30) tightly between a first original plate (10) with a plurality of curved portions (12) and a second original plate (20) with a plurality of projections (22) so as to provide a substrate (32) with a plurality of lenses (34) formed by the curved portions (12) and a plurality of recesses (36) formed by the projections (22); separating the first and second original plates (10, 20) from the substrate (32); and filling the recess (36) with opaque material (42) at the latest after the second original plate (20) is removed.
