Polymers (I) of a cyclic diene with conjugated double bonds consist of units with a 5-10 membered ring containing C and optionally Si and/or Ge atoms with an ethylenically unsaturated double bond, which are linked in the 1,4- and/or 1,2-positions and may have condensed carbo- and heterocyclic rings. Polymers (I) of a cyclic diene with conjugated double bonds consist of units (A-1) of formula (A) with a 5-10-membered ring containing C and optionally Si and/or Ge atoms with an ethylenically unsaturated double bond, which are linked in the 1,4- and/or 1,2-positions and may have condensed carbo- and heterocyclic rings; n = 1-6; X = C, Si or Ge; R<1> = hydrogen (H), halogen, alkyl, unsaturated hydrocarbyl, aryl, cycloalkyl, cyclodienyl or 5-10-membered heterocyclyl with N, O and/or S heteroatom(s); at least one of R<2> = OH or 1-4C alkyl-substituted aryl, iminocarboxyl, alkoxy, aryloxy or alkoxysilyl group or -(CH2)p-OH, -(CH2)p-C(O)-OH, -(CH2)p-C(O)-OR<3>, -(CH2)p-OR<3>, -(CH2)p-OC(O)-R<3>, -(CH2)p-CO(O)-OR<3>, -(CH2)p-C(O)-R<3> or -(CH2)p-O-(CH2)pOH group; p = 0-24 or 0-10; R<3> = linear or branched alkyl or aryl or a bridged optionally substituted diphenyl or 2-phenylethenyl group; other R<2> may = other substituents (R'); and 2 R' together may = a group forming a cyclic structure. The full definitions are given in the DEFINITIONS (Full Definitions) Field. Independent claims are also included for (a) polymers (II) with units of formula (A); at least one X = Si or Ge; (b) copolymers (III) with units selected from formula (A-3); X = C; R<2> = R' and other monomer(s) with double bond(s); (c) polymers (IV) with units obtained by using a specified transition metal complex catalyst (V) for polymerizing the corresponding cyclic conjugated diene; (d) corresponding modified or (partly) hydrogenated (co)polymers; (e) (co)polymers of cyclic conjugated diene monomer(s) consisting of 1,4-phenylene units and optionally units with double bond(s); and (f) the preparation of (co)polymers from cyclic conjugated diene(s) using catalyst (V) or a multicomponent catalyst (VI).
