PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject catalyst useful for polymerization of a compound having ethylenic unsaturated bond-containing compound, especially a styrene- based polymer having high syndiotactic structure by using a transition metal compound having a specific electron-donating unsaturated cyclic compound as aπbond ligand to transition metal. SOLUTION: This catalyst for polymerization comprises (A) a transition metal compound represented by the formula ArMXa Lb [M is a transition metal of the group IV to X; Ar is six electrons-donating unsaturated cyclic compound having H, a halogen-1-30C aliphatic hydrocarbon group or the like as substituent groups and coordinated to M byπbond; X isσligand; L is a Lewis base; (a) is 1-4; (b) is 0-2] [e.g. 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexamethyl-benzene]titanium tetrachloride] and (B) a compound selected from (i) an oxygen-containing compound (e.g. methylaluminoxane), (ii) a compound forming an ionic complex by reacting with the transition metal compound and (iii) a compound selected from clay, clay mineral and an ion exchangeable layered compound.
