PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To supply sufficient charge amount even in the case of high speed driving, to realize accurate gradation display and high transmissivity and to improve display characteristic by supplying necessary charge to liquid crystal over a selection period divided into (n) by making a non-selection period intervene in between. SOLUTION: The non-selection periods D1 and D2 are made to intervene in the periods H1 to H3 obtained by dividing the scanning selection period of a scanning signal conductor G1 into three, for example. The voltage waveform (a) of a scanning signal is impressed on the scanning signal conductor G1 and the voltage waveform (b) of an information signal is impressed on an information signal conductor S1 , then voltage waveform (c) is impressed on the liquid crystal of a pixel on the intersection of two waveforms. The voltage is impressed on the liquid crystal in the period H1 and drops by a current associated with the switching of the liquid crystal in the period D1 . The charge is supplied further in the next period H2 , and the voltage to be impressed gets higher and drops with the switching, but it attains the specified voltage, because the necessary charge amount is supplied by applying the charge in the period H3 . The high transmissivity corresponding to the voltage is obtained.
