PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the alignment of a reflection type liquid crystal display(LCD) device and to attain a wide visual field angle. SOLUTION: A panel is provided with a 1st transparent substrate arranged on the incident side of external light, a 2nd substrate joined with the 1st substrate through a prescribed gap and arranged on the reflection side, a nematic liquid crystal(LC) layer 3 held in the gap between both the 1st and 2nd substrates and aligned to a twisted state, and an electrode for applying voltage to the layer 3. When voltage is not applied, the LC layer 3 maintains the twisted alignment, is functioned as a 1/4 wavelength layer and passes external light in cooperation with a polarizing plate 70 and a 1/4 wavelength plate 80 to execute white display. When voltage is applied, the LC layer 3 is turned to almost vertical alignment, loses the function of the 1/4 wavelength layer and shields external light to execute black display. The orientation direction 3U of nematic LC molecules 4 brought into contact with the 1st substrate is set up to a range of 168.5±10 deg. from the upper direction of the panel screen and the orientation direction 3L of nematic LC molecules brought into contact with the 2nd substrate is similarly set up to a range of 51.5±10 deg. from the upper direction of the panel screen.
