A winter gritting medium, containing moisture absorbing components preferably in the form of plant fibers, is new. A winter gritting medium comprises a freezing point depressant and moisture absorbing components preferably of natural origin, the components having a longitudinal/transverse dimension ratio of greater than 1:2. Preferred Features: The components are woody components of plants especially flax, hemp, linseed and straw fibers.
