The sensor has an electrode group extending vertically above the container level, immersed in the liquid and forming electrical capacitors whose capacitances vary with level change. The capacitances are measured and evaluated to derive a signal representing the fill level. At least one measurement electrode (ES) extends over the entire container height. Several reference elements (ER1-ER5) are arranged at different reference heights within the container. An Independent claim is also included for a method of measuring the level in a container, especially a fuel tank.
