Machining of a workpiece (2) by electric discharge in a dielectric medium (150) is characterized in that the dielectric medium is delivered either by pressure or by suction into a through hole (20) being produced, either from the workpiece side (202) facing the electrode (10) or from the workpiece side (201) facing away from the electrode. An Independent claim is also included for the apparatus which includes a support unit (28) which is located on the workpiece side (201) opposite to the electrode so that a space (289) is formed. The apparatus further includes means for delivery of the dielectric medium into this space. Alternatively it includes means for sucking the dielectric medium out of this space.
