A method of maintaining constant the maximum power and/or the minimum power of a water heater that comprises a gas burner (2) by means of a pneumatic system for an automatic control of the gas-air mixer. The desired power is determined by a temperature controller (12) and is adjusted in dependence upon the volumetric flow rate of an air stream that is produced by a speed-controlled fan motor (4). In order to restrict fluctuations of the rated power of the appliance, the maximum speed setpoint nmax and/or the minimum speed setpoint nmin are adjusted in dependence upon an automatically controlled control pressure for the gas-air mixer (5).
